Green Beauty

How I Got Started

It’s really hard to pinpoint the exact moment I decided that I really cared about what I was using on my body – but I do have a distinct memory from several years ago that really got me started on the green beauty and DIY skincare path.

My roommate and I were in our bathroom at our apartment, this was in college, and we were both looking up all our products on the EWG Skin Deep database. We were also looking up natural and DIY alternatives for our shampoo, condition, face wash, etc. So in reality this started as a switch over to DIY natural skincare because at the time we didn’t have much money and it didn’t seem like there was much out there to buy.

This is when my roommate and I discovered 100% Pure. At the time it was the biggest natural beauty brand we could find, it was relatively affordable, and they had everything from haircare to skincare to makeup! For a couple years I used their Dark Chocolate Lengthening Mascara, their Fruit Pigmented Foundation Powder and a set of shampoo and conditioner. I didn’t really wear much makeup otherwise, and my skincare was super basic – I actually formulated my own oil cleanser with castor oil, avocado oil, and tea tree essential oil (and I used this mixture for almost 5 years!) and then I used plain coconut oil as a face moisturizer.

My routine worked really well honestly, I wouldn’t say there was anything wrong with it, however it got a little cumbersome to buy and store bulk sized products to formulate my face oil cleanser and get coconut oil into a small, manageable container for every day use. This brings me to the Olympia Farmer’s Market in early July of this year (2017) – where I found a local, hand crafted, all natural (partially organic) skincare line!

Let me introduce you to Pure Luxe Apothecary. Pure Luxe Apothecary is exactly what it sounds like, a brand of pure, luxurious skincare products that are totally toxin-free. I think it was the excitement and almost disbelief that here in Olympia, WA there was actually an all-natural skincare line that I could investigate in-person that jump started and reignited my love of all things natural and non-toxic. So needless to say this day at the farmer’s market I stocked up and got myself all the basics to overhaul my skincare and start using things that were professionally formulated – and recognizing that skincare was an investment I was happy to pay for.

Pure Luxe Apothecary
Enrich Daily Face Cleanser & Rosewater Hydrating Tonic
My first purchase consisted of:
What I love most about Pure Luxe Apothecary’s products is that they are potent and super simple – most of them only have 5-10 ingredients and absolutely everything is recognizable and organic when possible. I also love her use of essential oils, which in my opinion, are more unique than a lot of the typical formulations out there. Like her Enrich Daily Face Cleanser has Ylang Ylang essential oil, which I had never experienced before, and have grown to LOVE – it’s a bit invigorating and I love smelling it in the morning when I’m cleansing my face, and similarly at night when I’m removing my makeup.

Her Rosewater Hydrating Tonic is my most favorite product, though, it’s honestly the perfect toner. It’s a gorgeous blend of rosewater, witch hazel, aloe, and rose essential oil. It’s incredibly calming, super gentle, and I love using it with an organic cotton pad post-cleanse to soothe my skin and wipe away any residue that might be left behind.

And all that brings me to today – where I’m letting my passion for green beauty and non-toxic products lead me to find new great products and meet amazing people. So if you’re trying to get started and don’t know where to start these are a couple of great brands to check out. 100% Pure is a bit more affordable especially for non-toxic makeup, and their product line is super diverse so you can start clearing out your medicine cabinet one by one. Pure Luxe Apothecary is a simple, modern, and basic (in the purest way) set of skincare products designed to help your skin glow from within using the purest ingredients. I would highly recommend checking out both of these brands. Let me know what you think, or if you have any questions!

*I purchased all products with personal funds. I am not an affiliate or a sponsor for either brand mentioned.
